“Tenant stars as Litvinenko: ITVX’s clever casting for flagship drama”

David Tenant has recently featured as the casting for Alexander Litvinenko in a press release showcasing the upcoming ITVX exclusive: Litvinenko. Written by George Kay, this drama will cover the infamous poisoning of Russian defector Alexander Valterovich “Sasha” Litvinenko. Set to release in December, Litvinenko will be available on and alongside the launch of a new free streaming platform, ‘ITVX’

ITV studios alongside Tiger Aspect Productions and Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT Group) have collaborated with Livedrop media to dramatize the unfortunate story of Litvinenko, following the 2006 investigation that uncovered the fatal use of Polonium-210, a radioactive isotope that claimed Litvinenko’s life after his outspoken criticism of  Russian President Vladimir Putin. A story that sparked much controversy surrounding the Russian President, a controversy surrounding a political figure that is ever more present today.

David Tenant’s casting is pictured in the dramas latest press release, recreating the notorious photo of Alexander Litvinenko days before his death as the radioactive poison took its obscene affect. Previously, Tenant has been casted in other significant roles, specifically the role of Denis Nilsen in the ITV drama ‘Nes’, where he was critically acclaimed for embodying the series role of the infamous Scottish serial killer. Tenant similarly recreated a haunting mugshot of the serial killer that gave the ITV drama plenty of attention before its release.

To keep in line with the startling truth of this story, ITVX’s new drama has been produced with the support of key individuals who were involved with the investigation, including two Scotland Yard officers who interviewed Litvinenko, DS Clive Timmons (portrayed by Mark Bonner) and Brent Hyatt (portrayed by Niell Maskell). These interviews with Litvinenko provided Scotland Yard with the details necessary to track down and link his poisoning with two Russian agents.

Director, Jim Field Smith has also ensured to keep Litvinenko grounded to reality, by filming at locations in London where the event originally unfolded in 2006.

Litvinenko will be released in 4 parts through December, being the first original drama series on the UKs new streaming service ITVX. This fresh streaming platform will allow users to view dramas, documentaries, films and programmes from the US for free by simultaneously viewing advert breaks much like traditional TV but with the option for an adless paid subscription.

Tenant being casted as the lead role in ITVX’s flagship drama will draw a lot of attention to the streaming platform this winter kickstarting its role in the advancement and future of British media.
